🌿 Conservation with territorial impact
Although the canton officially covers some 53 km², Monteverde’s ecological model extends over more than 280 km² of influence, encompassing rural areas and neighboring areas. This approach demonstrates that conservation must extend beyond administrative boundaries.
One of the recent initiatives is the renovation of the Santa Elena center, transforming it into a more accessible, inclusive “green avenue” aligned with the community’s sustainable lifestyle.
🌡️ Urgent ecological challenges
Climate change has already left its mark: with an average increase of 2°C, the dry season has lengthened from 30 to 90 days, causing stress to species dependent on cloud forest microclimates, such as amphibians and iconic trees like the gualillo.
The extinction of the golden toad more than 30 years ago remains a symbol of what is at stake. Today more than ever, every action counts in preventing irrecoverable losses.
🌄 Nature that teaches
Monteverde offers not only natural attractions, but also immersive experiences: trails, suspension bridges, bird watching, agrotourism, waterfalls, and interpretive tours that turn the landscape into a living classroom.
